Regenerative Treatments

Regenerative medicine is an innovative medical field that combines the latest scientific research and medical technology, with a focus on non-surgical treatment of damaged tissues. Regenerative medicine has shown success in the treatment of damage or degeneration occurring in tendons, ligaments, inflamed tissue, degenerated joints and other painful conditions.

Regenerative treatments utilize the potential of cells, growth factors, and other biologic components to support and enhance the body’s natural repair process. These treatments may reverse the effects of traumatic injury, chronic pain, or wear-and-tear as a result of age or overuse.

Where is Regenerative Medicine Typically Used?

Regenerative therapy is focused on restoring our body to a younger age rather than fixing or repairing damaged tissues. Regenerative treatments have shown success in reducing pain and inflammation, restoring injuries, restoring joints, rejuvenating soft tissues, and improving overall quality of life. Treatments are available for many anti-aging, cosmetic, neurological, pain management, sports medicine and orthopaedic conditions.

Common musculoskeletal conditions treated with regenerative medicine include: inflammation, osteoarthritis, joint pain, tennis elbow, plantar fasciitis, tendinitis and tendinosis, tendon and ligament tears, muscle strains, bursitis, runner’s knee, hip pain, back pain, and neck pain.

During your consultation, Dr. Mulcahy will use ultrasound to evaluate and diagnose your condition. Her extensive background in point-of-care ultrasound and ultrasound education allows for a highly accurate diagnosis as well as precise delivery of cell-based treatments.

Dr. Mulcahy will also review your health history and will use an integrative approach to your treatment. You cannot build a bridge in a war zone. It is important that we reduce your body’s systemic inflammation prior to injections in order to improve their effectiveness. Depending on your health, Dr. Mulcahy may recommend a full integrative or functional evaluation and treatment plan prior to any regenerative treatments.

Platelet-Rich Plasma

Platelet-rich plasma, commonly referred to as PRP, helps to stimulate the normal healing process in damaged or deteriorating tissues. It is derived from your own blood and contains approximately 5-10 times the platelet concentration of normal blood. Because platelets have tremendous healing power, PRP treatment can be used for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.

BR+ NAD Treatments

NAD has the ability to protect tissues, induce DNA repair and increase lifespan. Stress and inflammation lead to decreased levels of NAD. A nutrient-poor diet, and/or malabsorption, can also result in low NAD. Sub-optimal levels of NAD are often associated with health problems including addiction, degenerative diseases, anxiety, depression, PTSD, sleep disorders and autism.

Ketamine IV Treatments

Ketamine has been used for acute pain and sedation for years. More recently, though, we’re realizing ketamine can be incredibly effective in treating a range of pathologies, including depression and neuropathic pain.

Ketamine has been shown to be helpful with anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), suicidal ideation and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

It has also been shown to reduce pain and inflammation. Neuropathic pain is pain caused from damage to nerves. The damage can be from inflammation, infection, compression on the nerves and so on. If pain persists for six months or more, that’s usually a good indication that nerves are involved

Nerve Treatments

We offer several different nerve treatment options.

Learn more about our nerve treatment options: Stellate Ganglion Block, hyrodissection, Lyftogt perineural injection, and sphenopalatine ganglion block.

Stellate Ganglion Block

A Stellate Ganglion Block is an outpatient procedure designed to address dysfunctional programming of the sympathetic portion of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Typically, this programming results from exposure to extreme stress or trauma, often resulting in debilitating cognitive and psychological symptoms.

The sympathetic part of ANS controls the body’s “fight or flight” response, preparing the body for emergency situations. The sympathetic nervous system (SNS), also controls several other bodily systems including blood pressure, heartbeat, skin temperature, and the eyes’ response to light. Other functions controlled by the SNS include stress response, ability to focus, sexual function, and ability to relax.

When the SNS experiences overwhelm resulting from extreme stress or exposure to trauma, it becomes re-programmed to an unnaturally high set point. When this occurs, the body remains in a state of hyper-arousal, leading to inappropriate responses to stress. Individuals coping with dysfunctional autonomic programming may exhibit over-reactivity to stress, or conversely, emotional numbness. Because these symtoms stem from what is known as an “emotional injury,” they can often be corrected. The stellate ganglion block has shown consistently positive results in the treatment of the following conditions, among others:

  • Overreactive response to stress
  • Panic attacks
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder
  • Inability to relax
  • Reflex sympathetic dystrophy
  • Insomnia
  • Inability to focus & think clearly
  • Emotional numbness
  • Loss of interest in everyday activities

Hyrodissection is essentially the release of a trapped nerve using fluid. Broken down, “hydro” means water, and “dissect” means to separate. Often, nerves become trapped as a result of tight muscles or connective tissue. When this occurs, circulation to the entrapped nerve decreases significantly, resulting in neuropathic symptoms such as numbness and tingling, radiating pain, “pins and needles,” weakness, and pain in the area around the nerve compression.

Lyftogt Perineural Injection

This treatment, first discovered and later significantly developed by Dr. John Lyftogt (pronounced “Liftoff”) consists of a series of small injections immediately under the skin targeting painful areas where the nerves are sensitive, with simple and natural substances. The substance Dr. Lyftogt uses is a buffered D5W (dextrose 5% in sterile water) with a neutral pH of 7.4.

Sphenopalatine Ganglion Block

The sphenopalatine ganglion is a grouping of nerves that is linked to the trigeminal nerve – the main culprit involved in headaches. If you apply numbing medications or local anesthetic to the SPG, it can help reduce pain related to headache or facial pain. A traditional sphenopalatine ganglion block involves application of an anesthetic solution either on a cotton swab or with a targeted injection through the face. More recently, these procedures have become less invasive, opting for an intranasal (up the nose) approach.

JOOVV Infrared Light Therapy

Light therapy is safe, effective and backed by a large amount of peer-reviewed clinical research. Light therapy can improve cellular function and ATP energy production. It can also decrease inflammation, improve blood flow and optimize sleep. It helps with recovery, healing and performance and mental acuity. It can also support skin health and beauty.

Light therapy treatments act on muscle cells in several ways. Light therapy:

  • Improves cellular ATP energy synthesis, glycogen synthesis
  • Protects against oxidative stress reduction and exercise-induced muscle damage
  • Supports healing and recovery by improving blood flow and oxygen availability.

All of these effects of light therapy may improve physical performance and enhance post-exercise recovery. Light therapy has also been shown to promote better fatigue resistance in bouts of exercise or strength training programs. Red Light, delivered at 660nm, is readily absorbed by surface tissues and cells, leading to enhanced skin health and healing. Near-Infrared light, delivered at 850nm, is invisible to the human eye and penetrates into deeper tissues leading to enhanced recovery and inflammation support.
