If you’ve been reading this blog you know that I’ve talked about genomics-based precision medicine previously.

I am currently wrapping up an amazing one-year fellowship in genomics-based precision medicine through Wild Health. The more I learn, the more I’m convinced I am that genomics play a crucial role in understanding and unlocking health and performance.

And all those catastrophic outcomes I saw devastating my patients in the ER? I also believe that genomics can give us key information to help prevent and reverse those disease outcomes.

Take me, for example.

A few years ago, I started eating a paleo-esque diet. There’s a lot of evidence that a diet rich in whole, nutrient-dense foods–congruent with the diet of our ancestors–supports positive health outcomes.

We know that animal products–particularly things like organ meats, eggs and full-fat dairy–are some of the richest and most bioavailable nutrient sources out there. I care about my health and want to reverse inflammatory aging processes, as much as possible. So, among other things, I started eating paté.

Enter genomics.

The majority of people living in the US would likely benefit from a paleo diet. However, it may have to be tweaked for each persons particular genomics.

As it turns out, I have a lot of genetic variants–or single-nucleotide polymorphisms (also known as SNPs, pronounced “snips”)–that affect my ability to process saturated fats.. This means that if I eat a lot of saturated fat, which is generally the fat found in animals that walk (plus coconuts), my chances of developing cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline increase significantly.

Upon learning of the specifics of the genomic hand I’ve been dealt, I have significantly cut down my animal product intake and shifted to a more plant-based and pescatarian diet, otherwise called Mediterranean Paleo. Without this information, I may have spiked my cholesterol and inflammatory markers and exacted some real damage on my body.

How can genomics help you optimize your health?

For the next six months, I’m excited to be working with Wild Health and beta-testing some of their genomics software. Their team of doctors and scientists, educators, and innovators have developed algorithms combining genomic information with extensive labs to produce a personalized health and performance report.

What does this mean for you? You have a unique opportunity to get access to your personalized report at a deep discount in exchange for sharing feedback on your experience.
